Dr. Helmholdt is a past co-owner of VCA Portage Animal Hospital. He is a 1991 cum 

laude graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He has 

practiced in the Chicagoland, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo areas. He has a special interest 

in veterinary cardiology. Although not board certified he enjoys being the local bridge for pet owners

between their general practitioner and board certified cardiology care when the need arises. 

He enjoys playing guitar, flying his airplane and spending time with his daughter's Hannah, Olivia, and

his wife of 28 years, Tonya. His pet family includes cats Bella, Little Miss and Hope and their

most recent canine addition Stabler.
